Charlie Burtenshaw

Charlie Burtenshaw (b. 1996, Medway, UK) lives and works in London.

Charlie Burtenshaw develops paintings in which images emerge slowly through layered, reworked surfaces, resisting immediate recognition. Working with landscape motifs such as houses and rural structures, she holds these forms in a state of instability, where what should anchor the scene instead appears provisional and unsettled. Through a process of accumulation and revision, earlier iterations remain active beneath the surface, producing images that carry their own memory and refuse singular resolution. Burtenshaw’s paintings stage a tension between appearance and withdrawal, where visibility is never fully secured and the act of looking remains suspended.
